Battle of the Bands 2018 Review

Battle of the Bands 2018

The Oatlands College Battle of the Bands 2018 was a great success. Oatlands College and the Parents Council are delighted to sponsor and host this event which is now in it’s fourth year. It is wonderful to facilitate and celebrate the talent, enthusiasm and passion of these students.
This year we had seven bands competing with members ranging in age from 13 to 17 years. The music and styles were varied and diverse in style, with some song covers and a few original works.
We were delighted and honoured to welcome John Brereton and Eugene Connolly, our two guest Judges for the night. Both John and Eugene are actively involved in the music industry. Overall they were generally impressed with the planning and preparedness, quality of performance, presentation and the bands interaction with the audience. It was a very difficult decision choosing a winner as some bands were new and performing for the first time while others were more established performers. Whilst the judges were making their decision we welcomed back our 2017 winners, Atticus, who entertained the audience. Thanks for the extra song guys !
Before the winner was announced, we had our free draw for the audience – Top Prize was 2 Tickets to the Chainsmokers and Rita Ora who play in the RDS in June.
After the Interval, our Judges were invited to the stage by our MC Darren Kavanagh and after a few words of wisdom they announced the 2018 winners “Cactus Juice” a metal band who have been together for two years. The judges felts they played well together and had a very punchy sound and were delighted to present them with the prize cheque for €500.00 Congratulation to Cactus Juice and we hope they will return next year, to play for us at Battle of the Bands 2019.
Our judges, John and Eugene, spoke to many band members and their families after the event offering encouragement, advice and provding feedback. This was invaluable and very much appreciated – such a fantastic opportunity to receive professional advice !
